Metamora’s resurgent football program remains undefeated on the 2018 season, after beating Dunlap on our main game of the week last Friday. The Redbirds played a nearly perfect first half, jumping to a 28-0 lead at the break, en route to the 35-14 road win. Lanky senior quarterback Tommy Hall ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as the Redbirds improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference. By the way, Dunlap’s fine tight end/defensive end, Josiah Miamen, over the weekend chose to play his college football at Iowa. There’s now a handful of Peoria area players going at it at the highest level of college football.
Morton, meanwhile, fell for the first time this season, dropping a 55-27 decision at home to unbeaten and #1-ranked, Class 5A, Washington. The Potters scored more touchdowns against Washington’s D than their previous four opponents did combined, running back Tag Grampp scored three himself. Morton returns most of its key players from last year’s playoff team and will look to keep pace in the Mid Illini.
Former Peoria Pirates coach and starting lineman for Illinois, Tony Johnson and I call the action from Metamora’s Malone Field. Tom Meredith will be at Peoria Stadium for the Big Twelve, all-Peoria game between 3-2 Peoria High and 1-4 Richwoods. The Lions surrendered a last-minute TD at Normal West last week to fall out of first place in the conference.
