Last week was a sad one for us lifetime rock n rollers, losing not one, but two legends of rock: Eddie Money and Ric Ocasek of The Cars just a day apart. I highlighted the deeper, great tunes from The Money Man last week. The week at 6:15p on Doc’s Deep Dive, it’s the more-or-less lost cuts from The Cars, paying tribute to the uniquely talented Ric Ocasek, merger of new wave, pop and rock.
Ocasek died Sunday, 9/15 in his sleep at his Manhattan apartment. His estranged wife, former super model Paulina Porizkova found him when she was bringing him his morning coffee. The death was caused by heart disease/natural causes.
I never knew that Ric and his longtime band mate Benjamin Orr had teamed up together in a half dozen bands before hitting it big with The Cars. Orr passed away in 2000 from pancreatic cancer. Their friendship actually started in Ohio, and they lived in the Midwest for a while before heading to Boston. The Cars six albums between ’76-’88 – pretty much the formative years of my life – were huge, eventually earning the group induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year.
