I was initially not thrilled late last year when Eagles co-founder (and my favorite Eagle) Don Henley hinted that the Eagles may reunite at some point. This came in the wake of the death of my Detroit homeboy Glen Frey in January of 2016.
Now, I’m good with it. Yesterday, Henley said Frey’s replacement for the two summer shows, Classic East and West, that the Eagles are playing would by Glenn’s son, Deacon.
Henley told a Dallas radio station yesterday that, “Deacon is a very talented young man, and he seems to be up for the task.” The silver-voiced Henley compared it to the guild system, when the father was the master craftsman, who handed down the trade to his apprentice son.
This isn’t a totally unique situation. Jason Bonham filled in for his late father, John, when Led Zeppelin reunited for the one-off Celebration show in London in 2007. Deacon is 23. I knew nothing about him prior to this announcement, but hope he has the great pipes of his old man. We’ll be watching and listening.
