For 44 years, the Steamboat Classic has been Central Illinois’ premier running event. The ‘boat is more than just another race, it’s a huge event that brings in runners from around the world and it’s loved by people from all athletic abilities where you’ll see walkers, joggers and runners of all ages and ability levels. This is by far any Peoria area runners favorite local race….and hands down the BEST post race party!
I honestly cannot tell you how many years I’ve run the Steamboat Classic, I remember running it 10+ years ago when I was 30lbs over weight and not anywhere near the runner I am today. I’ve ran the 4 mile and the 15K, once I even got an age group award, however I have YET to reach my Steamboat race goal, which is the 4 miler in 30 minutes or less-I came close once missing it by just 30 seconds. I was hoping to hit it this year and training wise I probably could buuuuut I’ve been having server tension in my calves that I haven’t been able to quite get worked out yet and its holding me back. I’m still going to go out there and try, but goal or no goal, I still have the time of my life at this race.
Why? Three Words…Unlimited….Free….Beer! You read that right, come on now, you don’t think we run just for the fun of it do you? 😉 The Steamboat has always had the free beer drawl, live music and it just seems no matter where you turn you’re bumping into a friend. The social aspect after the race is what makes it so awesome, it really is just an awesome celebration with friends no matter if you got an award, made a PR (personal record), or just simply survived the race.
I personally invite you to join me this Saturday the 4 mile race is flat, fast and fun! The 15k, that’s another story it’s gotta a double hill in it that could make you cry-BUT you’ll feel soooo strong and accomplished after beating. Still think both are too much, there is also a 2 mile option, so please come join the fun and see what all they hype is about and remember unlimited, free beer at the finish! #IrunForBeer
