Fifteen area high school football teams in the 95.5, GLO, listening area earned a trip to the post season. But after round one, just six area teams are still alive in the IHSA state football playoffs.
We’ll feature 9-1 Peoria High, the Big 12 champions, on Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock, when the Lions host another 9-1 team, the Centralia Orphans in Class 5A. Bruce Cowdrey, Tom Meredith and I will call the action from venerable Peoria Stadium. Pregame show begins at 3:30 pm, featuring my interview with Peoria High coach Tim Thornton.
The other five area survivors also play on Saturday. 10-0 Washington breezed by Limestone in our first round Red Zone game of the week last week. Now, the top seeded Panthers travel to 8-2 Sterling for a 1 pm kickoff in Class 5A. 8-2 Notre Dame ended its season-ending two-game losing streak by beating Normal West in the rain at Richwoods. The Irish earned the right to face the defending state champion, Sacred Heart Griffin, in Springfield at 1 pm.
In smaller school action, 8-2 Dee Mac hosts Mendon Unity in Mackinaw at 1 pm in Class 2A. 9-1 Elmwood-Brimfield travels to suburban Chicago to play Elmhurst Catholic at 4 pm, and 10-0 Stark County travels North to face Forreston in Class 1A.
